1. Freezer Is Cold But Fridge Section Is Warm

This is one of the most common problems. The freezer makes cold air, but the air is not moving correctly into the fresh food section. The issue is usually with airflow, frost buildup, or the air damper.

Most Likely Causes

• Evaporator fan not running or running on and off
• Frost or ice buildup on the evaporator blocking airflow
• Air damper from freezer to fridge stuck closed or broken
• Return air vents blocked by food items
• Defrost system failure (defrost heater, thermostat, or control)

DIY Checks (Safe Basics)

• Set fridge and freezer to normal factory settings, not max cold.
• Listen for the freezer fan when the door is closed. You can lightly press the door switch with a finger to test.
• Make sure vents on the back wall of the fridge are not blocked with containers or bags.
• Check door gaskets so cold air is not escaping and warm air is not entering and creating frost.
• If you see a thick wall of ice behind the back panel in the freezer, the defrost system may have failed and needs service.

If the fan is not running, or frost keeps returning after defrosting, a deeper diagnostic of the fan, damper and defrost system is required.

2. Scraping or Grinding Noise That Stops When You Open the Door

If you hear a scraping, ticking or grinding noise while the doors are closed, but the noise stops when you open the fridge or freezer door, the problem is often with the evaporator fan or something touching the fan blades.

Likely Causes

• Ice buildup around the evaporator fan blades
• Fan blade hitting ice, wiring or insulation
• Loose fan shroud or panel vibrating against the fan
• Worn fan motor bearing creating a loud whine or scraping sound

DIY Checks

• Open the freezer and listen. If the noise changes when you press the door switch, it is likely the evaporator fan.
• Check for obvious frost buildup around the back freezer panel.
• Make sure packages are not pushing against the rear panel inside the freezer where the fan runs.
• Do not chip ice with sharp tools - this can damage coils or liner.

In many cases the fan motor or housing needs to be inspected and ice removed correctly without damaging the sealed system.

3. Fridge Leaking Water in Front of the Doors

Water on the floor in front of the fridge is usually related to defrost water drainage, a blocked drain, or door gasket and leveling issues. It may also be related to the water supply or filter if you have an ice maker or water dispenser.

Common Leak Sources

• Blocked defrost drain causing ice and water to spill into the fresh food section
• Clogged drain hole under the crisper drawers
• Condensation from doors not sealing correctly
• Leaking water line, filter, or connection at the back of the fridge
• Fridge not level, causing water to run forward instead of to the drain

• Check under the crisper drawers for standing water or ice. This often points to a blocked defrost drain.
• Look at the door gaskets for gaps or areas that do not touch the cabinet.
• Use a level to check if the fridge is slightly tilted back so doors close naturally.
• Inspect the water supply line at the back of the fridge for drips.
• Empty and clean the drain tray under the fridge if accessible.

If the drain system is frozen inside the cabinet or a water line is leaking, the panels often need to be removed and the area properly defrosted and repaired.

4. Fridge and Freezer Are Cool But Not Cold Enough

When both compartments are cooling but never reach proper temperature, and the unit runs a lot, the problem can be airflow, condenser, or sealed system performance.

Most Common Causes

• Dirty condenser coils causing poor heat release
• Condenser fan not running or running weak
• Thermostat or control not cycling the compressor correctly
• Door gaskets leaking warm air into the fridge
• Sealed system problems such as low refrigerant charge or weak compressor

DIY Checks

• Clean the condenser coils at the back or under the fridge. Use a brush and vacuum to remove dust.
• Make sure there is good space around the fridge for air to move, especially at the back and top.
• Check if the condenser fan is running when the compressor is on.
• Confirm the doors close properly and are not blocked by shelves or food.
• Use thermometers in the fridge and freezer to measure actual temperature rather than guessing by feel.

If the compressor runs often, the condenser is clean, the fan works and temperatures stay high, a sealed system check by a certified technician is needed.

⚠ Always unplug the fridge before removing any panels. Do not puncture coils or use sharp tools to remove ice. Sealed system work, refrigerant handling and compressor diagnostics should only be done by a qualified technician.

Fridge Maintenance Tips To Prevent Breakdowns

• Clean condenser coils at least once a year: More often if you have pets or the fridge is in a dusty area.
• Keep food away from vents: Do not block air vents on the back wall inside the fridge and freezer.

• Set correct temperatures: Aim for about 3 to 4°C in the fridge and about -18°C in the freezer.
• Do not overload the fridge: Good air circulation is key. Too much food packed tight reduces cooling performance.

• Level the fridge: A slightly tilted back position helps doors close and seal properly.
