GE fridge repair for Toronto homes and condos
We fix GE fridges that stop cooling, frost up, leak or make scraping noises. Common work includes clearing blocked defrost drains, freeing iced-up fans, fan motors, defrost heaters and sensors, door gaskets and control boards.
A fridge that runs warm can spoil food fast. We check the fans, the defrost system and drain, the condenser and the controls and fix the real cause, so the problem doesn't come back.
Common GE fridge problems we fix in Toronto
We repair GE fridges and freezers in Toronto homes and condos, including bottom-freezer and French-door models. These are the problems we see most often:
Often the evaporator fan is stuck in ice from a blocked defrost drain, or a fan motor has failed. Cold air stops reaching the fridge.
The freezer fan blades hitting ice. It usually means ice is building up from a blocked drain or a defrost problem.
Defrost water that cannot reach the drain tray freezes on the floor of the freezer.
A defrost problem or a door that does not seal, so moisture keeps freezing on the coil.
A blocked or frozen defrost drain, or a cracked drain pan.
A dusty condenser, a weak fan or a frosted coil. The fridge works harder and still runs warm.
GE fridge not cooling: evaporator fan frozen in ice from a blocked defrost drain in Downtown Toronto
The problem: This GE bottom-freezer fridge in Downtown Toronto was not cooling, and the freezer was only partly cold. We could not hear the evaporator fan running. With the fan cover off, we found the fan stuck in a block of ice.
The cause: The defrost drain was blocked. Debris partly blocked it, so the defrost water backed up and froze solid in the drain. The ice kept building up until it reached the fan and stopped it from spinning. With no fan moving cold air, the fridge warms up and the freezer cools poorly.
What we did:
- Took off the fan cover in the freezer
- Melted the ice around the fan and the drain, and vacuumed up the water
- Cleared the blocked defrost drain tube
- Poured water in to test the drain: it flows to the drain tray
- Checked that the fan spins freely and the air moves again
- Put everything back together
Result: The drain flows, the fan spins and the fridge is cooling properly again.
Tip: Ice on the floor under the freezer drawers, or a scraping or screeching noise from the freezer, usually means the drain is blocked and ice is reaching the fan.

Quick checks before you call
- Look under the bottom freezer drawers for a sheet of ice on the floor.
- Listen for a scraping or screeching noise from the back of the freezer.
- Make sure the freezer vents are not blocked by food.
- Set the fridge to about 3 °C and the freezer to about -18 °C.
Defrosting the fridge can help for a while, but if the ice comes back after a few days, the drain needs to be cleared. Call us and we will find the real cause.
GE fridge repair FAQ
Why is my GE fridge not cooling but the freezer is partly cold?
A common cause is ice around the evaporator fan in the freezer. On the Downtown Toronto job above, the defrost drain was blocked, the water froze, and the ice stopped the fan, so no cold air reached the fridge.
Will defrosting my fridge fix it?
Sometimes. If the drain clears once the ice melts, defrosting can solve it. If the drain is badly blocked, the ice usually comes back within a few days, and the drain needs to be cleared.
Is it worth repairing a GE fridge?
