What causes it
A burning smell from a dryer has a short list of causes. Some are harmless, two are fire risks. This is how we tell them apart:
Lint that reaches the heater box scorches and smells like burnt paper or dust. Harmless once, dangerous if it keeps happening.
An electrical, plastic-like smell. The heater connector overheats and blackens. We rebuilt one on a Samsung dryer in Toronto.
Hot rubber smell. The belt drags on a pulley that no longer turns, until it snaps.
A hot electrical smell with a hum: the motor is stalled or its windings are failing.
A crayon, a pen, a plastic toy or a dryer sheet stuck to the drum gives a chemical smell for a few loads.
The dryer runs hotter than designed and everything inside, lint included, starts to cook.

Quick checks before you call
- Stop the dryer and unplug it if the smell is electrical or there is any smoke.
- Check the drum for melted items and the lint filter housing for scorched lint.
- Note the smell: burnt dust (lint), hot rubber (belt), or electrical/plastic (wiring or motor).
- Do not run the dryer again until it has been opened and checked.

Why does my dryer smell like it is burning?
Most often scorched lint on the heater, a belt rubbing a seized pulley, or burnt heater wiring. The first is a cleaning; the other two are repairs that should not wait.
Is a burning smell from the dryer dangerous?
It can be. Lint plus heat is how dryer fires start, and burnt wiring can arc. Stop using the dryer until it has been checked.
The smell is like burnt plastic. What is it?
Usually the heater terminal or wiring overheating, or a melted item in the drum. On our Toronto Samsung job the heater terminal connector and wiring were burnt and had to be replaced.
Will a dryer vent cleaning fix the smell?
If the cause is lint on the heater or a blocked vent, yes: we clean the heater box, the blower, the lint housing and the vent. If the cause is wiring, a pulley or the motor, that part is replaced as well.
