Dryer Taking Too Long to Dry: repair for Toronto homes and condos

We fix dryers that stop heating, take too long, make noise, overheat, smell hot or will not start. Common work includes thermal fuses, heating elements, thermostats, belts, rollers and pulleys, motors, control boards, and cleaning the vent all the way to the wall.

Most dryer faults start with airflow, so we check the vent, the lint housing and the blower on every call and fix the cause, not just the symptom.

Common Problems

What causes it

When a dryer that used to finish in one cycle now needs two or three, it is almost always airflow. Here is what we check, in order:

Blocked vent or vent hose

The hot, wet air cannot get out, so it stays in the drum. A hose that is too long, kinked or crushed behind the dryer does this on its own.

Condo ceiling vent screen packed with lint

Many Toronto condos vent the dryer into a box in the ceiling with a screen. When the screen fills with lint, drying time doubles. It needs cleaning every few months.

Lint filter housing and blower full

Lint that gets past the filter builds up in the housing below it and in the blower wheel. Airflow drops a little every month until the dryer cannot keep up.

Weak or partly failed heating element

A coil that has broken in one place can still heat, just not enough. The dryer gets warm but never hot.

Moisture sensor coated with residue

Dryer sheet residue on the sensor bars makes the dryer think the load is dry (or never dry). Auto-dry cycles become unreliable.

Overloading or wet loads

A washer that does not spin out properly sends soaking clothes to the dryer. Sometimes the slow dryer is really a washer problem.

LG dryer slow to dry, Etobicoke condo

The ceiling vent screen was packed solid with lint. We cleaned it, the lint filter housing and the blower compartment, and drying time improved a lot.

From our technician: In Toronto condos the dryer often does not vent straight outside: it goes into a box in the ceiling with a screen. Nobody cleans that screen because nobody knows it is there. If your dryer suddenly takes much longer, check that screen first; on our last condo job it was packed solid.
Service standard

Octopus Royal uses in-house technicians only - no subcontractors, no commission-based pressure, and no unnecessary upselling.

Food-safe cooling

We find why a dryer is cold, slow, loud or hot before it costs you a new one.

Quick Checks

Quick checks before you call

  • Clean the lint filter and check it is not torn.
  • Look at the hose behind the dryer: it should be short and straight, with no kinks or crushed spots.
  • In a condo, check the ceiling or wall vent screen: if you can see a grey mat of lint, that is your problem.
  • Run the dryer on air fluff (no heat) and hold your hand at the outside vent flap: weak airflow means a blockage somewhere.

If the screen or hose is clean and the dryer is still slow, the lint is inside the machine or the heater is weak. Call or text (647) 286-1327; our dryer vent cleaning includes the inside of the dryer.

FAQ

Dryer Taking Too Long to Dry in Toronto: FAQ

Why is my dryer taking so long to dry?

Restricted airflow in nine cases out of ten: a packed condo vent screen, a crushed or clogged hose, or lint inside the filter housing and blower. A weak heating element is the next most common cause.

How often should a condo dryer vent screen be cleaned?

Every 3 to 6 months, and the lint filter after every load. On our Etobicoke condo job the screen was packed solid and the customer saw a huge difference after one cleaning.

Does dryer vent cleaning really fix slow drying?

When the cause is airflow, yes, immediately. We clean the hose, the vent in the wall or ceiling, the lint filter housing, the blower and the exhaust port, then run the dryer and check the airflow.

Could a slow dryer be a fire risk?

A blocked vent is the main cause of dryer fires. A dryer that takes too long is usually telling you the vent needs cleaning.

What does it cost to fix a slow dryer in Toronto?

The $85 service call covers the diagnosis, and you get the full price before any work. If it is a vent cleaning, we tell you exactly what will be cleaned and replaced (for example a short hose instead of a long crushed one).
