Dryer Making Noise: repair for Toronto homes and condos
We fix dryers that stop heating, take too long, make noise, overheat, smell hot or will not start. Common work includes thermal fuses, heating elements, thermostats, belts, rollers and pulleys, motors, control boards, and cleaning the vent all the way to the wall.
Most dryer faults start with airflow, so we check the vent, the lint housing and the blower on every call and fix the cause, not just the symptom.
What causes it
Dryer noises are easy to diagnose by sound. These are the ones we hear most in Toronto homes and condos:
Worn drum support rollers or a dry idler pulley. The sound is loudest at the start and fades as the parts warm up, then comes back.
A roller with a flat spot or a broken roller shaft, so the drum rubs on the frame. We replaced one at a salon dryer in Thornhill.
A worn drum roller, a loose drum baffle, or something caught between the drum and the front panel (a coin, a bra wire).
A seized tensioner pulley rubbing the belt until it snaps, or a loose blower wheel. On our Scarborough job the pulley had seized and worn through the belt.
The motor is powered but the belt is broken or the drum is jammed. Switch it off: a stalled motor overheats.
Worn rear drum bearing or glide, or a dryer that is not level on a stacked laundry pair.

We find why a dryer is cold, slow, loud or hot before it costs you a new one.
Quick checks before you call
- Note when the noise happens: on start, all the time, or only with a load.
- Check the drum for anything caught (coins, screws, bra wires) and the lint filter housing for debris.
- Make sure the dryer is level and, if stacked, that the stacking kit is tight.
- Turn the drum by hand with the dryer off: grinding or a flat-spot thump points to the rollers.
A squeal or grind that gets worse week by week is a part wearing out. Fixing it early is a roller or a belt; leaving it can take the motor with it. Call or text (647) 286-1327.
Dryer Making Noise in Toronto: FAQ
Why is my dryer squealing?
Worn drum rollers, a dry or seized idler pulley, or a worn rear bearing. These are routine repairs: on most dryers we replace the rollers, the pulley and the belt together, because they wear as a set.
Why does my dryer thump?
Usually a drum roller with a flat spot or something stuck between the drum and the cabinet. A thump that is exactly once per turn is almost always a roller.
My dryer hums but the drum does not turn. What is it?
A broken belt or a seized pulley. On our Scarborough Whirlpool the tensioner pulley had seized and worn through the belt. Belt and pulley replaced, blower cleaned, back to normal.
How much does a noisy dryer repair cost in Toronto?
Rollers, belts and pulleys are among the less expensive dryer parts. The $85 service call covers the diagnosis, you get the full price before any work, and the $85 is waived with the repair.
Can I keep using a noisy dryer?
A squeal for a few days is not dangerous, but a grind or a stalled hum should not be run: a stalled motor or a belt rubbing a seized pulley can overheat.
