Dryer Not Starting: repair for Toronto homes and condos

We fix dryers that stop heating, take too long, make noise, overheat, smell hot or will not start. Common work includes thermal fuses, heating elements, thermostats, belts, rollers and pulleys, motors, control boards, and cleaning the vent all the way to the wall.

Most dryer faults start with airflow, so we check the vent, the lint housing and the blower on every call and fix the cause, not just the symptom.

Common Problems

What causes it

A dryer that does nothing, or hums and gives up, is usually one of six things. We test them in this order:

No power: breaker, outlet or cord

A dryer breaker is a double breaker; check both halves. A burnt plug or outlet is common on older Toronto homes.

Door switch

If the dryer does not know the door is closed, it will not start. A door switch that has worn out or a latch that no longer presses it.

Blown thermal fuse (on some models)

On many Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore dryers the thermal fuse is in the motor circuit: when it blows, the dryer is completely dead, not just cold.

Start switch or control board

The dryer lights up but the start button does nothing. A worn push-to-start switch, or on electronic dryers a board relay.

Belt or belt switch

The motor hums, or on some models the dryer will not start at all because the broken-belt switch has opened.

Motor

A motor that hums and clicks off after a few seconds has seized or its centrifugal switch has failed.

Dryer repair in Toronto →
From our technician: If your dryer died right after a load that came out very hot, the thermal fuse probably opened, and on many models that cuts the motor too. The fuse blew for a reason, usually a blocked vent. We replace the fuse and clear the vent in the same visit; one without the other does not last.
Service standard

Octopus Royal uses in-house technicians only - no subcontractors, no commission-based pressure, and no unnecessary upselling.

Food-safe cooling

We find why a dryer is cold, slow, loud or hot before it costs you a new one.

Quick Checks

Quick checks before you call

  • Check the breaker panel and reset the dryer breaker fully off, then on.
  • Try another appliance in the dryer outlet (240 V outlets need a dryer-type plug; do not force it).
  • Close the door firmly and listen for the door switch click.
  • If the dryer hums, switch it off: do not keep trying, a stalled motor overheats.

If the panel lights up but the dryer will not start, it is usually a door switch, a start switch or a fuse: a quick repair. Call or text (647) 286-1327.

FAQ

Dryer Not Starting in Toronto: FAQ

My dryer is completely dead. What is wrong?

Power first: breaker, outlet, cord. Then the thermal fuse, which on many dryers kills everything when it blows. Then the door switch and the start switch.

My dryer hums but will not spin. What is it?

A broken belt, a seized pulley or a stuck drum. On our Scarborough Whirlpool the belt had snapped because the tensioner pulley seized; belt and pulley replaced in one visit.

My dryer starts and stops after a few seconds.

A failing motor, a bad door switch, or the thermal fuse opening under heat. We test each one rather than guessing.

What does a dryer not starting repair cost in Toronto?

Switches, fuses and belts are inexpensive parts; a motor costs more. The $85 service call covers the diagnosis, you get the full price before any work, and the $85 is waived with the repair.

Should I replace a dryer that will not start?

Not before a diagnosis. Most dead dryers need a part that costs a fraction of a new machine. If it is the motor on an old dryer, we tell you and you decide.
